Dubrovnik - Restaurants

Overview and Flavors

When on a cruise to Dubrovnik and specially when visiting the Old Town, there are few streets where you cannot find a restaurant - in fact, it is sometimes complicated to pick one as there are so many choices. The cruise ship traveler can always follow your nose: there is always good local tasty fare, from fresh seafood cooked in olive oil, to scampi served in the shell.

Photo of Croatian Fish Dish
If you want to fit in, and eat like a local, don’t pick up a fork to eat your scampi, use your hands, and suck the head like a crawdad in New Orleans. One of life’s simple pleasures is sitting in a restaurant here, and enjoy the colorful town or just people watching. With so many good restaurants in Dubrovnik, the choice and diversity are there for the cruise ship traveler to easily pick the one that will catch the fancy of the day. Looking at menus outside the restaurants is always advisable and, surely, there will be attractive terraces and esplanades in wonderful spots that will appeal whilst exploring the old city

Editor's Picks - A to Z

The restaurants below are suggestions based on recommendations by experienced travelers that have visited Dubrovnik, the experience of the Editor in the last 15 years and the most recent visit to Dubrovnik in July 2015. Naturally, because the cruise season spans between Spring and Summer, restaurants with al fresco seating were primarily chosen.

Atlas Club Nautika
Splurge with a View - $$$$

Flavors

Dubrovnik's Cuisine

Dubrovnik's cuisine is truly Mediterranean relying on fresh produce, fish and meat, usually grilled over charcoal or fried - typically seasoned with garlic, olive oil, and lemon, sometimes with a touch of rosemary or bay leaf and sprinkled with parsley. Inevitably, the menus can be a bit repetitive.

However there are also some 'local' recipes that the Editor strongly recommends.'Crni Rizot' - a risotto with cuttlefish; 'Janjetina raznja' - slow barbecued lamb; 'Brujet/brudet/brodetto' - a casserole of fish and onion; 'Šporke makarule' - a local version spaghetti bolognaise but with small chunks of beef and fresh tomatoes; 'Pašticada' - a lean piece of beef studded with carrot, garlic and bacon, and marinated in wine, oil and vinegar; 'Konavoska zelena menestra' - a selection of cured meats cooked up with greens, broad beans and potato

For desserts, the Editor's Favorites are 'Rožata' - a Dalmatian version of crème caramel and 'Stonska torta' - a cake made with macaroni; and 'Mantala'' a purple colored cake served with almonds and cinnamon.

Wines

A typical meal requires the best possible wine pairing and the local grapes produce some of the most prized wines in Croatia. In fact, the Pelješac peninsula is know for two excellent red ones: Dingač and Postup (both with rich flavors) although a bit pricey. For a more affordable and still locally produced alternative the Plavac Pelješki is a good bet.

If the cruise traveler prefers white wines, the Dubrovnik Malvasia is a must. Rich in flavor and intense it pairs well with both fish and meats (especially cured) - shouldn't be confused with the northern Croatian 'Istrian Malvasia'.
